A STORY WE WOULD LIKE TO SHARE

A story from Bulgaria, Project Smile Creators:

In Bulgaria many children living in orphanages have little hope for a bright future. They often receive a poor education and receive almost no personal attention. They almost never receive adult encouragement to pursue a higher education – a vital step toward obtaining more success in their lives.

HP Bulgaria’s Smile Creators project aims to give children from the St. Ivan Rilski Home for Children, caring adult role models to follow, while also helping them with their education, motivation, happiness and health. The home, located in the village of Razliv, is home to 50 children aged 7 to 18. The Home is struggling to meet the minimum requirements set by the EU for a dignified existence.

The program is now entering its third year and almost 200 employees have participated to date. The core of the program features monthly themed visits to the orphanage. HP volunteers engage the children in a wide range of activities – both educational and fun including aerobics, dance, football, basketball, studying math, literature, geography, reading books together, preparing handicrafts, discussing various life issues and featuring guest speakers.

The goal of the volunteers is to engage one or several children during each visit and to help them with their personal difficulties.

Volunteers also take the children on regular outings – adding a great deal to their quality of life. They rent a bus and transport all the children to interesting locations – to a mountain monastery, the Sofia zoo, to a puppet show, the movies, to picnics at the HP office site and more. The volunteers also organize charitable events periodically to raise money to support the children.

The children eagerly await each monthly event – it’s a highlight of their lives. While they learn new skills during the visits, more important is the connection HP employees have created with them. They are one of the very few groups of external people they have the chance to meet. They consider the volunteers as friends, positive role models and people they can share their problems with.

One wonderful success is the story of Vasil, an orphan who has benefited from Smile Creators. Vasil desperately wanted to apply to attend the Sofia University. With donated resources HP employees managed to arrange private lessons for Vasil on several topics he was struggling with. He went on to successfully pass his entrance exams and will attend the University this year! Now Vasil is living in Sofia, preparing for his new adventure and receiving ongoing support by HP volunteers.

What a huge difference Smile Creators is making in the lives of these children!
